The curled hair and pale flesh tones follow the Portuguese tradition of devotional statuary. The stars on the hem were repainted in gold, one by one.

The story of this piece
This statue came to the studio broken, with the polychrome crazed. The second photograph is the bench, before: the face was only cleaned, never repainted — that is what separates restoration from overpainting.
Every piece is painted by hand. Small variations in colour between one statue and the next are not a flaw: they are the signature of handwork.
